William was an esteemed professor, a published author, and a social butterfly, but all that changed in 2018 when William suffered a nervous breakdown. This led to overwhelming social anxiety and intrusive thoughts of self-harm resulting in an admission to a mental health unit. After several weeks William returned home but was now no longer able to work and was effectively housebound. William’s wife Elizabeth was still working full-time, albeit from home, and wanted to continue to do so. Elizabeth enjoys her work immensely and it allows her to have a creative outlet.
Although William needed support from his wife he recognised her need to keep working too. He also wanted to retain some sense of being useful and independent. As William’s health declined this became increasingly more difficult and led to frustration and often embarrassment almost feeling emasculated. In 2021 William and Elizabeth were signposted to CM2M, a Leicestershire based company that provides buddies for men over 55. William’s buddy is able to support William for a few hours a day in doing various tasks around the home, running errands and general keeping him buoyed up. They also spend the time listening to music, watching videos and sharing funny stories. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is able to get on with her work without worry or concern knowing he’s in safe hands and good company.
“Easing the burden”
Elizabeth says; “Since becoming a full time carer for my husband I have relied upon CM2M to provide male companionship, easing the burden of care on me. This has also enabled me to continue my work, which has been important to my sense of wellbeing.
Additional support from CM2M whilst I take my ‘carers breaks’ is also a great help to me, enabling me to get away to recharge my batteries and to return more refreshed.”
The intrusive thoughts are a rare occurrence these days and though the social anxiety is still there, William really looks forward to his buddy arriving and the few hours they spend together are a real joy.
